Banners
Banners are derived from an ancient craft which is still
very popular today. The Assyrians,
Egyptians, Greeks and Romans all fought under their respective
banners. Today, the Colours so revered by every army battalion
on earth are items of great pride and lifelong honour and are
basically banners. Banners depict allegiance. Banners create
pride. Banners are flags that carry a symbol, logo,
slogan or any custom message.
Banners
come from the Latin name "bandum". In ancient Germany banners
were used to publish edicts.
Banners were used in battles as a rallying point for soldiers.
Banners were used by Japanese soldiers to identify
themselves on the battle field. Each group had their own
banners. Banners were used in crusades and in many other battle
fields and wars including the American Civil War.
Today, banners are mainly used for advertising but many
societies, groups etc. still have their own banners. The
difference between banners and flags is that flags are tied to
poles on one side. Banners have sleeves and can be hanged
vertically or horizontally. The size of banners also vary
greatly from flags.
There are many forms of banners. Heraldic banners are
also called banners of arms. These banners usually have a family
weapon or crest. There are many medieval banners. Heraldic
banners are usually square of rectangular.
Church
banners were mainly used for processions in the past. In recent
years banners are mainly for display on walls or pillars of
churches. A famous example of large banners on display is in the
Liverpool R.C. Cathedral, where banners are designed by a
resident artist.
There are many examples of the use of banners in the Bible.
Banners
are mentioned in the Old Testament. Banners were shown in
Jericho.
Today,
banners mainly communicate the testimony of Jesus Christ by
evangelists and public ministers who use banners for open air
preaching.
Trade
Union banners have been made since the 1840’s and for communist
May Day parades banners are counted in the hundreds. The
iconography of these banners include mines, factories, etc. but
also visions of the future. Banners convey messages. Many
countries use the same kind of banners. Many of these banners,
but not all of them, use red as a dominant colour.
Banners are often commercially made on plastic. The
industry has been evolving from traditionally cut-vinyl banners
to banners printed with large format & wide format inkjet
printers. A number of British towns and cities have whole series
of banners decorating their city centres, effectively
advertising the town or its special features and attractions.
Protest banners are routinely carried by demonstrators.
Typically these banners are at the head of the procession, or
fixed to walls, trees or other stationary objects.
As an
art form, protest banners can have elaborate designs or just
consist of a slogan hastily scribbled or sprayed on a piece of
canvas, cloth or cardboard. Somebody once noted that protest
banners explicitly announce their instrumentality; the banners
are designed for application in the service of an end outside of
itself, which is why banners are barely afforded the status of a
medium in the discourse of art.
In the modern day and age a there are other forms of banners as
well. For example: web banners. Web banners or banner ads
are a mode of advertisement on the World Wide Web. This unique
form of online advertisement entails embedding banners into a
web page. The motive of such banners is to attract more
customers to the advertiser’s website.
Advertisements on the internet which carry the shape of banners
are also commonly called "banners". Web banners are widely
popular.
Banners as ads can be an image or just good font utilization. Ad
banners can be created as re-usable banners or once-off
banners. Various technologies create these banners. These
banners are used on websites with lots of visitors. Online
banners are new means of advertising. Banners advertise
anything!
